“A Class Apart” brings to life the early struggles of Mexican Americans against the Jim Crow-style discrimination targeted against them throughout the American Southwest. The film is built around the remarkable tale of an underdog band of Texas lawyers whose landmark 1954 Supreme Court case recognized the rights of Mexican Americans to full civic participation and helped pave the way for a civil rights movement that is still very much alive today.

Directed by Carlos Sandoval and Peter Miller, Edited by Aaron Vega, Associate Editor Paul Docherty

Last night saw Ken Burns being presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 29th News & Documentary Emmy Awards. Before an illustrious audience filling the Rose Theater at the Jazz at Lincoln Center, Ken accepted the award not for himself, but for the friends and mentors who have helped guide his career, and for the dedicated and gifted team who have supported his film making for over 25 years. I was very fortunate to be able to attend and count myself as part of that team.

Congratulations to everyone honored last night.

Ken Burns’s ‘The War’ was nominated for several awards last night but only walked away with three:

OUTSTANDING SOUND EDITING FOR NONFICTION PROGRAMMING (SINGLE OR MULTI-CAMERA) went to the episode “When Things Get Tough”. Congratulations must go to Erik Ewers, Ryan Gifford, Mariusz Glabinski, Magdaline Volaitis, Ira Spiegel, Marlena Grzaslewicz and Jacob Ribicoff for winning with their work on this episode, and for their exceptional achievment with the sound on the rest of the series.

Geoffrey C. Ward was awarded Outstanding Writing For Nonfiction Programming for ‘Pride of Our Nation.’ Nice one.

Keith David was also awarded a jury prize for Outstanding Voice Over Performance for his narration of ‘A Necessary War’

‘Pride of Our Nation’ (one of the episodes on which I was lead assistant editor) was also nominated for Outstanding Picture Editing For NonFiction Programming, but that award went to Kim Roberts for ‘Autism: The Musical.” I should probably go watch that now…
